Hanky Panky

The Hanky Panky is a stirred cocktail made with London Dry gin, sweet vermouth, and a small measure of Fernet-Branca, served in a chilled coupe and finished with an expressed orange peel. It was created by Ada Coleman at the Savoy in London around 1903.

Method

  1. Combine gin, sweet vermouth, and Fernet-Branca in a mixing glass.
  2. Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir for 20 to 30 seconds.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe.
  4. Express the orange peel oils over the glass and drop the peel in.

Orange peel, expressed and dropped in.

Pro tip

Fernet is a flavoring here, not the body. Two dashes is the spec. Push it further and the herbal bitterness will overrun everything.
